An Introduction to Horticultural Therapy

This course will describe the practice of horticultural therapy (HT), its benefits, and a brief history. Participants will learn the various ways HT is used with examples from around the country of the diverse settings and populations where it has been effective, including Bullington Gardens in Hendersonville. A tour of the Therapy Garden and how various elements are helpful in horticultural therapy including raised beds vertical plantings, ground surfaces and examples of plants that are particularly useful is included. Please wear sturdy shoes.

John Murphy is the Education Director of Bullington Gardens, and has developed the gardens and educational programs at Bullington since 1999. He has a MS in Horticulture from Penn State, is a registered horticultural therapist and a licensed teacher. John lived and worked overseas for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone and in the Indonesian province of West Papua for four years.
