The population of Asheville increased dramatically in the 1800s due to the coming of the railroad. Then came the flood of 1916 which left many industrial buildings abandoned. In 1985, the Highwater Clays Company bought a building that began the district’s transformation. Old industrial buildings were converted into working studios, workshops, art galleries and co-op spaces. Today, more than 200 artists, restaurants, and retail shops make up this one mile River Arts District along the French Broad River.

We will meet at 10:15 a.m. in downtown Asheville at the Lexington Glass Works where our tour will begin. At this location, you will enjoy a 30 minute glass blowing demonstration. You will have time to view the demonstration and look around the shop at the beautiful works on display.

We will then move on to the River Arts District to the area called Riverview Station. There are 27 studios featuring many mediums at this location. We will meet at 11:15 a.m. at Studio #180 for a demonstration at the Village Potters. At the conclusion of this, you will be free to explore the studios of interest to you. Arts represented here are baskets, bluebird pottery, and sculpture. One of the well-known Asheville artists, Jonas Gerard, has his Studio #144 located at the north end of the building. There is also an antique retail store next to his studio.

The tour ends at the Village Potters, but you may stay as long as you like in the area on your own. There are also many restaurants in this district, the newly located 12 Bones, Yuzu Patisserie & Café, and White Duck Taco Shop to name a few.
