Global Capitalism and the Rise of ISIS

This two session overview will summarize the historical impact of colonization and decolonization of the Middle East following the two World Wars. It will include the neo-liberal hegemonic spread of global capitalism, the rise of populist responses variously known as Al-Qaeda, ISIL and ISIS, and the potential collapse of the international order.

Richard Naylor holds Master’s degrees in English and Clinical Psychology. In 1974 he was hired by the Saudi Arabian government to teach and coordinate a two-track English program at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran. Richard has traveled extensively in the Middle East, and studied Arabic to gain a deeper appreciation of Islam. He has also taught courses on Islam for BRCLL programs.
