Bird watching (or birding as it's now more often called) is the largest and fastest growing hobby in the country. From backyard birdwatchers to international birding travelers, it is estimated that over 50 million people enjoy birds to some extent or other. We will talk about the birds in our area, binoculars, bird books and everything one needs to know to start enjoying this fascinating hobby, even giving tips as to how to learn bird songs.

Simon Thompson, nationally recognized ornithologist, was born in Malta and educated in Britain. He leads small groups of naturalists and birders both within North America and to many locations throughout the world. He owns and operates his own bird watching and natural history tour company. He gives many bird watching talks and programs throughout Western NC as well as regular commentary for WNCW, the local public radio station. Simon also writes columns for two local newspapers.
